5 of the most beautiful settings for a relaxed road trip
A road trip is a fantastic trip for everyone to take at least once in their lives. It’s the very definition of an adventure where the journey is as important as the destination. Instead of sitting passively on an airplane, seeing nothing but clouds, you really get to see the place you are exploring, with the freedom of being able to stop off wherever the mood takes you. You don’t have to worry about getting up early and maybe missing your flight (which 25% of travellers have admitted to doing!), you can do things at your own leisure and really relax. These are five of the most beautiful settings for a relaxed road trip.
Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland
Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland is the longest coastal route in the world, running 2500km up the Western Coast, and boasts amazing views at every turn. Take a few weeks and soak up the colossal cliffs, beautiful beaches and different culture. Be sure to spot Aran Islands, Cliffs of Moher, Slea Head Drive and Mizen Head, and if you are going to enjoy some local Guinness, make sure you get a taxi back to your accommodation!
Cabot Trail, Canada
If you want to see animals in the wild on your road trip, as well as have the chance to explore some quaint villages, head to Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. When you go through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, you might be lucky enough to spot moose, black bears, and bald eagles, so keep your eyes peeled! Then head across to explore some of the charming villages, which will remind you of France or Spain.
Ocean Drive, USA
There are so many amazing road trips that you can take around the USA, but this one in Portland, Oregon is super cool. Soak up the culture and amazing music scene in the north, and then head down south through the coast to explore the stunning (and empty!) beaches, visit the little villages and keep your eye out for grey whales!
Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, Austria
You don’t need to be able to pronounce it to enjoy the stunning views! Although it’s only 30 miles long, these 30 miles are practically touching the clouds and offers incredible views over 37 mountains. In such a short stretch, you will climb up to a lofty 8215ft and experience so many different landscapes, from lakes and glaciers to meadows, cliff faces, and hills. You’ll be surprised at how many different types of terrain you will see as you wind around the 36 hairpin bends.
South Island Circuit, New Zealand
If you want to intersperse your relaxing journey with adrenaline-boosting activities such as bungee jumping, skydiving or canyon swinging, this is the place to be! The landscape is stunning and will take your breath away in spots, especially between Te Anau and Milford Sound, where you are crossing some of the Southern Alps.
So don’t just settle for driving down the same old boring roads on the way to an exciting destination, make the journey just as much of an adventure! Let us know if you have any other recommendations for beautiful settings for a relaxed road trip.
